How to pack your laptop for the courier

Ten minutes of careful packing is the difference between a laptop that arrives as it left and one that arrives with a new fault. Here is how we ask customers to do it.

Step by step

  1. Find a rigid cardboard box at least 5cm larger than the laptop on every side. The original box is ideal if you kept it.
  2. Protect the screen. Lay a sheet of paper or thin card over the keyboard and close the lid.
  3. Wrap the laptop in several layers of bubble wrap and tape it closed.
  4. Pad the box. Put a layer of padding in the bottom, place the laptop flat in the centre and fill every gap so it cannot move when you shake the box.
  5. Add the charger, wrapped separately so it cannot press against the lid.
  6. Add a note with your name, phone number, email address and a description of the fault.
  7. Seal every seam with parcel tape and remove or cover any old labels.

What works as padding

Good

Bubble wrap, foam sheet, air cushions, tightly crumpled packing paper.

Poor

Loose newspaper, clothing, a single layer of anything. They compress in transit and leave the laptop loose.

Never

A padded envelope or a laptop bag on its own. Neither protects against a drop or weight stacked on top.

Special cases

The screen is already cracked

Pack it the same way, with card between the keyboard and the screen. If the glass is shedding fragments, tape a sheet of paper over the screen first.

A hinge is broken and the lid will not close

Do not force it. Pack the laptop open and flat, with padding between and around both halves, in a larger box.

The battery is swollen

Do not send it yet. Call us: damaged lithium batteries are restricted by couriers and we will advise on the safest option.

Something was spilt on it

Keep it switched off, dry the outside and tell us before collection. See our liquid spill advice.

It is a desktop PC or an iMac

These need different packing. Contact us first and we will talk you through it.

It is worth photographing the laptop, including the serial number label, before you seal the box. Then see what to do before you send it.

Get a price from a technician

Tell us the make, the model and what has gone wrong. A technician replies with a price and the quickest way to get your laptop to us – normally the same working day.
